TAKE ACTION!
Prepare for the community expo next month by sharing your work with someone you trust.
REFLECTION
Reflect on what you have learned by participating in this program.
My REFLECTION is on the general chat. For Question #2: I’m glad to see that the Leadership Program has the funding to continue another year. If I were to give one piece of advice to the next cohort, I would say that “open-mindedness” only sounds easy. In reality, it is a challenge to place yourself in a stance of “not-knowing”, to discard pride and assumptions, to really listen to other people’s experiences and criticisms. Talking to people who think and value different things from you can help you strengthen and give voice to your own principles, but also to consider the experiences of communities that you might be ignoring or unaware of.
Please realize the gift of such a diverse group of people, and take advantage of their willingness to share.
The advice I would give to everyone in Peel Region is basically the same. Part of equity work is putting down your guard and letting yourself be challenged, criticized, and taught.
My message to the next batch of Community Leadership Program is to come to the sessions free of judgment and assumptions. If the hearts and mind are full, empty it so you have space to fill in the values, learnings, insights that you get from the group sharing and facilitators inputs. Empty your heart means to leave the negativity and have the room for positivity for it leads to being less judgemental and be more caring and loving.
Being one of the participants of this Leadership program is a great privilege. The training gives me the opportunity to enhance my learning about my co-participants struggles and how we are able to cope up with to put diversity, inclusion, and equity in perspective. We have many differences but we somehow develop the trust and respect we need from each other to meet our common goals.
I live in Brampton North East, in the Springdale and Castlemore Area
I am starting a women’s coffee group.
This women’s group will be discussing topics specifically related to our community and how we can use some of our resources & how we can fix them.
Some of the issues I would like for us to discuss are:
Education
Mental Health and Services
Employment
Newcomers
I would like to meet once every 2 weeks
I liked learning that there are many people who are interested in helping their community and finding ways to fix problems. Sometimes this is the best way to get anything done, completely grassroots.
I liked one of the ideas that came up at the last meeting about starting with the project and giving people time to put their projects together while at the meeting
And I also liked the idea that someone else came up with to have the time to talk to people.
My message for next year’s class is to continue with developing relationships with other community ambassadors outside of the sessions. I would even say it is crucial to make this a priority. Some of the best conversations and learning I have had has happened outside of the Saturday sessions. I appreciate everyone’s patience, honesty and presence over the past few months. My circle has grown and I am grateful for it.
